Reinventing the railway

Located at the end of the Mitchell’s Plain railway line, and next to Mnandi Beach resort on the False Bay coastline, this unique opportunity site is found at the southern end of Mitchell’s Plain, a suburb forming part of the greater Cape Flats area in Cape Town.

The site forms a collection of undeveloped land parcels, underutilized and obsolete road and parking infrastructure around Kapteinsklip railway station, some undeveloped open spaces and naturally vegetated areas. Roughly 25 km south-east of central Cape Town, this locality on the False Bay coastline is earmarked to develop into a new local coastal node of mixed nature and special significance.

C40 Cities:
Initiated by the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group and made possible thanks to the support of Climate KIC, Reinventing Cities is a global competition that seeks to transform underutilized sites through sustainable and community-focused projects to drive decarbonized and resilient urban regeneration.

Expected program:
Significant mixed commercial and residential development of variable scale, density/intensity and typology. It should also include the necessary community use/civic elements and a (tenure-blind) gap/affordable housing component, together with the associated public realm improvements.

To amplify the success of the first competition, C40 is now enabling cities to continuously join Reinventing Cities with new sites, to create an ongoing and dynamic competition and to catalyze systemic change. Today, C40 is launching 25 new sites to be reinvented in 9 cities: Cape Town, Chicago, Dubai, Madrid, Milan, Montreal, Reykjavik, Roma and Singapore.

Through this competition, C40 and the participating cities invite multi-disciplinary teams of architects, planners, developers, entrepreneurs, environmentalists, startups, neighborhood collectives, innovators and artists to submit proposals which deliver carbon neutral and resilient urban regeneration, and can serve as a model for city landmarks of the future.
